Ignition Interlock Providers For DUI In NJ
WHERE TO RENT INTERLOCK DEVICE FOR CAR IN NJ?
Now that the law has changed in New Jersey, more individuals are subject to needing an Ignition Interlock Device in their car as a result of a DUI. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission regulates the installation and use of Breath Alcohol Ignition devices ordered by the court to be installed in a vehicle. If your provider is not licensed and authorized by the NJ MVC, you may have just wasted your time and money having it installed. The official list of providers approved by the NJ MVC can be found here:

If a court orders you to install an Interlock Device, you will receive a notice of suspension from the NJ MVC with instructions on how to obtain the device. However, you can get ahead of the game and contact an approved provider.
WHICH INTERLOCK PROVIDER SHOULD I CHOOSE?
It is recommended to choose an installation provider near your home or work because you will have to bring your vehicle to the facility for recalibration every 60 days. Recalibration can easily take an hour to perform, so you need to factor this into your choice. If you do not keep up with the required recalibration, the device will not work and you will not be able to start your vehicle until you receive a one time code from the provider and get the recalibration performed. There is also a difference in price between providers. You may find one place close to you is cheaper than another. Therefore, call a few approved providers to shop around for a good price.
It is also important to note that there are statutory discount programs available for those that cannot afford to install the device. Similar to applying for a public defender, there is an income evaluation that is done to see if you qualify for a discount.

HOW MANY VEHICLES DO I NEED TO INSTALL INTERLOCK ON IN NJ?
Under the law, you only need to install an Interlock Device in one vehicle owned, leased or principally operated by you. Therefore, if you personally own more than one vehicle, choose the one you drive the most. Keep in mind though, that during the term of your Interlock Device, you may NOT drive any other vehicle in New Jersey. You must drive the one with the installed Interlock Device. If you are caught driving a vehicle without the installed device, you are subject to a one year suspension of your driving privileges.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT INSTALL AN INTERLOCK DEVICE AS ORDERED?
If you do not install a court ordered interlock device on your vehicle, your license suspension could be longer then you expected. Failure to install could also result in a denial of restoration of your license and an additional one year suspension.
WHAT IF I DO NOT OWN A VEHICLE TO INSTALL THE DEVICE?
If you do not own a vehicle, you could install it on a vehicle you drive that someone else owns. Of course keep in mind that if someone else attempts to drive the vehicle, they will have to blow into the device to make it start and continue to operate just as you would. If there is no vehicle available to you to install the device, you will forfeit your driving privileges for a period of time to be determined by the court.
HOW DOES AN INTERLOCK DEVICE WORK?
Once the device is installed in your car, you will have to blow a breath sample into the device each time you want to start the car. If that breath sample provides a blood alcohol content (BAC) of less than 0.05%, your car will start and you will be able to drive it. If the BAC is 0.05% or more, the car will not start for an hour. You can then try again after the hour expires and see what your BAC reading is.
Assuming your BAC is in the appropriate range and your car starts, you will begin driving to your destination. However, you will have random tests approximately every 15-20 minutes while you are driving to confirm your BAC is still within an approved range. Let's say your car starts, but you decide to drink while you are driving. If you blow into the device after the car starts and the BAC is above the appropriate range, the device will create a very loud noise and cause the lights on your vehicle to flash and your horn to sound. This will unfortunately continue until you pull the vehicle over and turn it off. You will then be in a one hour lock out again before the vehicle will allow you to blow into the machine and possibly drive it.
