Why Parents Of Teens Should Have Criminal Defense Lawyer On Speed Dial

4/10/2015

Lisa Green, the author of "On Your Case: A Compassionate Legal Guide for Every Stage of a Woman's Life" believes every parent of a teen should have a criminal defense lawyer in mind and at the ready, just in case. Her basis for this is how easy it is for a kid to make a mistake that has horrifying consequences. Take for instance the 18 year old girl who is thought to have encouraged her friend to commit suicide. This young woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter for sending the text telling the friend to commit suicide. She didn't have any part in the plan or action. It is crazy how quickly a teen's life can go from normal everyday to life altering legal consequences. What would you do if your good, well behaved child did something stupid and was arrested? Would you then start calling around to talk to attorneys and try to make a quick decision and hope you made the right choice. What if it is a Saturday night and your child is arrested. What attorney is answering their office phone Saturday night? That means that if you are lucky to blindly call a law office and get someone, you have no idea who or what you are getting into. The alternative then is to navigate the police and jail on your own and wait until Monday to start calling around.

What is best is to talk to attorney ahead of time. Do not hire them. There is nothing for them to do. Simply know your options in a calm, collected head that is not frantic while your baby sits in jail with a very high bail amount. Have that name and number in your phone, on your refrigerator or where ever you keep important numbers. Maybe even have two. When and if the time comes, you are ready. You will just need to retrieve the number and make a call knowing that you have prepared for the worst case scenario and can focus on your child now.
